When will you be updating again?

I just saw the film last night and need more to think about. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the films that inspired Todd in making I'm Not There, but I don't know if that would be outside the reason for this blog's existence.

Hi, thanks for your post.

I saw the film over a month ago and it sort of crimped my ability to post since I was spoiler wary. (I got a few things right huh?) I'm seeing it again tomorrow and now since it's opening wider than at first announced I have to rethink this journal and spoilers be damned.

This probably isn't anymore than you've read but the film directly references 81/2, Masculin Feminin, Richard Lester's Petulia, and Hard Day's Night, Bound for Glory, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid but also cinematography wise, McCabe and Mrs Miller and Butch Cassidy. And he makes a nod to his own Far from Heaven in one of the most bizarre living rooms ever.

The documentary stuff includes Ed Emshwiller's footage of Dylan singing Hattie Carol that is featured in No Direction Home (copied right down to the guys in overalls on the truck in the background, haha.) Haynes has said that he wasn't referencing Don't Look Back but rather Eat the Document.(I've only seen bits of Eat the Document- like Dylan and John Lennon talking in a limo - so I can't say.) DA Pennebaker made Don't Look Back and then Dylan took footage from him and edited it himself to made Eat the Document which was never officially released. There's a lot of the 1965 San Francisco press conference, called "Dylan Speaks" on dvd.

In referring to Petulia, I have to mention an important fact that Nicholas Roeg was the cinematographer. I think the film is equally a Roeg film as a Lester film. There is always to me an undercurrent of his style and sense of editing in Haynes' films. Petulia is out on DVD with great extras. I'd always seen it edited on late night TV with commercials and it was fab to see a good print.

I think I saw a credit to Michael Snow last time - maybe some of the stuff Charlotte Gainsbourg is watching on TV is his.

This is just off the top of my head. More to come... What did you think?

i have a question
i have started a protest to not cut my hair or shave my face until the war in iraq is over, so basically never, also i have a solo project [myspace.com/cameronthecommunist]
i was wondering who was the actor that played the white-faced frontman of the band at the funeral in Riddle, MO during the billy the kid part of the movie? he kinda reminded me of a mix between grizzly adams and cary brothers but im not sure who it is. i checked imdb but i didnt find anything of relevence.
all i want to do is find a picture of him and grow my beard like is his or something, im not gay but i must say he was very cute

must log in...

The singer is Jim James of My Morning Jacket, but in the film he performs with the band Calexico.

To each his own, darling, but he was perhaps the only man in a makeup in a Todd Haynes film that didn't make me swoon.
